It All Begins With ME!
Jacob's Light Foundation
The Story of Jacob's Light Foundation, Inc:
As of November 2014, Jacob's Light Foundation has shipped Care Packages totaling over 635,000 pounds to our troops overseas.
On December 31, 2014, Jacob's Light Foundation officially closed its doors. Thank you Dorine for all that you have done to support our troops throughout the years!
Jacob Samuel Fletcher was profoundly affected by the terrorists attacks on September 11, 2001. At the age of 27 Jacob joined the army, and fulfilled his lifelong calling to serve his country.
He went to basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia where he graduated basic and continued training to earn his wings as a paratrooper, which he wore with pride.
Jacob received his orders and was stationed in Vicenza Italy. I used to send care packages to Jacob each week as a way to show my support and love for him. Jacob was concerned with the fact that there were several of his buddies that were not receiving any support or mail from home. He asked me if I could help by sending his buddies mail. Something which I happily agreed to do.
Jacob was with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and was one of the 1,000 paratroopers to make the historic jump into Northern Iraq on March 26, 2003. After the 173rd jumped into Northern Iraq the Kurds came up to them. It wasn't a planned situation and the Kurds actually followed them down to Kirkuk. While in Iraq the 173rd patrolled, went on many dangerous missions and trained the Iraqi police officers.
On November 14, 2003, 11 days before Jacob's 29th birthday, he was killed while riding on a bus on Highway 1 in Samara when a roadside bomb exploded as they passed by. To honor him I sent a care package box to his unit. I kept shopping and sending boxes and when people asked where to donate in his memory I asked them to send packages to troops to honor him. They gave me the money and said "you do it." I did and have never stopped sending the care packages that are filled with so much love and support to our men and women overseas.
Dorine Kenney, Founder/Executive Director
In January 2004 the "light" of Jacob's Light Foundation,Inc. was lit and Jacob's Light Foundation, Inc., became aa IRS 501 (c) 3, not for profit charitable organization. Jacob's Light is currently serving the troops with Dorine Kenney leading the way in her beloved son's memory. With the help of its financial donors and 300 plus volunteers, Jacobs Light has sent over 500,000 pounds of comforts and necessities in care packages to American troops overseas; Many of whom would not otherwise receive mail or support from home. Jacob's Light has received thousands of letters of appreciation from these heroes acknowledging the difference they are making in the lives of these brave men and women. These are a few excerpts from those letters;
"…I would like to extend my gratitude for the care packages that we received. Nothing brings up morale like mail and let me assure you that your packages are the best we’ve ever seen. It means a lot to us to be able to see how much thought you’ve put into the contents of your boxes, although I think the biggest morale booster are the phone cards. They never fail to fill the room with happiness, knowing that we can talk to our loved ones back home…I just want to ensure you that you are making a difference to us and it means so much to us that you have been taking the time to put these boxes together for us We thank you all from the bottom of our hears. God Bless... Staff Sergeant , US Army
"….I am a married father of two and I would like to thank you for your support. I recently received one of your care packages and I am extremely grateful to have received one. I am currently stationed in Afghanistan …About 4 years ago I received a package from your organization. At that time I was stationed in Iraq . I am glad to see your organization is still around supporting troops. I thank all who participated… SFC, US Army
"…thank you for the care package. I put it out to give to the soldiers and it was empty within minutes
"...we special forces soldiers really appreciate the package you sent us . Every item was either eaten, read or used. Please keep the them coming because it really helps... Master Sergeant, US Army
